FAMILY CLASS- SPOUSE, COMMON LAW PARTNERS, PARTNERS, DEPENDENT CHILDREN, PARENTS, GRANDPARENTs AND OTHER RELATIVES

If you are a Canadian citizen or permanent resident or person registered in Canada as an Indian under the Canadian Indian Act, and you are at least 18 years old, you can sponsor certain family members such as spouse, partner, dependant children, parents/grandparents, and relatives to come to Canada if you meet all requirements for sponsor.

There are several family sponsorship categories:

  1. Sponsor your spouse, partner, or dependent children:

    • If you are eligible, you can sponsor your spouse, partner, or dependent children to become permanent residents of Canada. You must be able to support them financially and make sure they don’t need social assistance from the government.
    • Government Fees: from $1,050 for spouse, partner. For a child: $ 150
    • Processing time: about 12 months for spouse, partner. You can check processing time by visit: https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/application/check-processing-times.html
    • There are two types of applications for Spouse and Common-Law Sponsorship
    • Outside Canada Spousal Sponsorship: your application will be processed through the visa office in the sponsored spouse’s country of citizenship or where they legally reside. It is possible to apply under this category if you and your Spouse/Common-law partner live together in Canada. Applying under this category will make you eligible to Appeal a refusal.​
    • In-Canada Spousal Sponsorship: your application will be processed in Canada and you and your sponsor must live together. The person being sponsored must have temporary status in Canada as a worker, student, or visitor. The person being sponsored may be eligible for an Open Work Permit. You will not have rights to appeal for an In Canada Spousal Application.

  2. Sponsor your parents and grandparents:

    You can sponsor your own parents and grandparents if:

    • You’re at least 18 years old
    • You live in Canada
    • You’re a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident of Canada, or a person registered in Canada as an Indian under the Canadian Indian Act
    • You have enough money to support the persons you want to sponsor
    • To show that you have enough, you’ll have to provide your proof of income.

  3. Sponsor other relatives

    You may be able to sponsor certain relatives to immigrate to Canada under the Family Class if you’re at least 18 years old and a Canadian citizen or person registered in Canada as an Indian under the Canadian Indian Act or permanent resident of Canada

    If you sponsor a relative to come to Canada as a permanent resident, you must:

    • Support your relative financially when they arrive, they will be able to meet basic needs for yourself and your relative, such as: food, shelter, clothing
    • Make sure your relative doesn’t need social assistance
